Hundreds of teachers, education workers and retired staff members took to the streets in Balurghat on Wednesday, demanding reforms in teacher recruitment, payment of pending allowances and action against alleged corruption in the state’s education system.
The demonstration, organized by the South Dinajpur district unit of the Left-affiliated Teachers and Educational Employees Unity Forum, culminated in a deputation to the office of the District Magistrate. The protest began in the afternoon near the Balurghat Museum premises, where several hundred teachers and education workers gathered before marching through the town in a show of dissent.
Leaders of the forum(ABTA, ABPTA and Sara Bangla) outlined a list of demands, including exemption for currently serving teachers from the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), immediate payment of pending dearness allowance (D.A.) dues to teachers, education staff and retirees, and legal action against those allegedly involved in corruption related to primary and secondary school recruitment.
The protesters also called for an increase in funding for the Mid-Day Meal scheme for students, regularization of temporary teachers and education workers, and punitive measures against individuals accused of corruption in teacher transfer processes.
Among those present on behalf of the Unity Forum were teacher leaders Bhajan Saha, Shankar Ghosh, Parijat Saha, Dibyendu Siddhanta, Basuri Ray,Rakesh Kundu, Alinda Chakraborty and Arnab Chowdhury, among others. The demonstration reflects continuing frustration among sections of West Bengal’s teaching community over recruitment irregularities, delayed benefits and broader concerns about transparency in the education sector.
