The long-cherished dream of the residents of South Dinajpur is finally on the verge of becoming a reality. On Saturday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari made a major announcement regarding the establishment of a full-fledged medical college in South Dinajpur, along with other districts. During the event, the Chief Minister emphasized that this move is in line with the Prime Minister's vision to ensure every district in India is equipped with a medical college to strengthen the healthcare backbone of the nation.
The Chief Minister further clarified that the state government is identifying the four administrative districts in West Bengal that currently lack a medical college, namely Alipurduar, Kalimpong, South Dinajpur, and Asansol in Paschim Bardhaman. A formal written proposal, including details on the required land and necessary infrastructure, will be submitted to the Government of India shortly. Additionally, he assured that steps are being taken to establish an AIIMS in North Bengal, with plans to expedite the process after discussions with local MLAs and MPs.
This project has been a focal point of regional politics since the 2026 Assembly Elections. While the opposition had previously used the demand for a medical college as a primary campaign issue, the current government's proactive steps are being viewed as a significant victory for the people by political analysts. The announcement has triggered a wave of celebration across Balurghat and the entire district, as citizens welcome the prospect of modernized healthcare.
Local residents believe that the establishment of this medical college will fundamentally transform the district's healthcare landscape. Once functional, patients will no longer be forced to travel to distant cities or neighboring states for critical treatments and surgeries. Beyond healthcare, the project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and provide a major boost to medical education for the youth of South Dinajpur.
