A fatal road accident on a busy national highway(512) in West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur district claimed the life of an e-rickshaw driver on Sunday afternoon and left an election observer injured, sources said.
The collision occurred around 2 p.m. along National Highway 512, within the jurisdiction of Patiram police station, near Baul. According to local sources, a vehicle carrying an observer assigned to Kushmandi was traveling from Balurghat when it reportedly lost control and struck an oncoming e-rickshaw with considerable force.
The impact crushed the three-wheeler and caused the observer’s vehicle to overturn on the road, witnesses said.The e-rickshaw driver, identified as Khagendra Nath Sarkar, 56, died at the scene. The observer, identified as Sanmugarajan S., sustained minor injuries.
Residents and police personnel responded quickly, initiating rescue efforts and clearing the roadway. The incident caused significant disruption and alarm in the area, particularly given the time of day on what is typically a busy stretch of highway.Police have begun an investigation into the cause of the crash. Initial reports suggest a loss of vehicle control, though officials said a detailed inquiry is underway.
