The Bharatiya Janata Party’s South Dinajpur district leadership on Saturday felicitated West Bengal Legislative Assembly Speaker Rathindranath Bose at a public event in Balurghat, where remarks on opposition rights and North Bengal’s future development added political significance to an otherwise ceremonial gathering.

The event, held at Rabindra Bhavan in Balurghat, also honored three BJP legislators from the district: Balurghat MLA Bidyut Kumar Roy, Gangarampur MLA Satyendranath Roy and Kushmandi MLA Tapas Chandra Roy. District BJP president Swarup Chowdhury and several local party leaders attended the program.

Alongside the felicitation ceremony, Speaker Rathindranath Bose held a closed-door meeting with district BJP leaders, underscoring the gathering’s broader political undertones.Addressing reporters after the event, Mr. Bose responded to questions surrounding allegations that the Leader of the Opposition had been denied office space in the Assembly. “The opposition is honorable,” he said. “We have received a letter from them. The present condition of the room will be examined, and necessary renovations and arrangements will be made before allotment.”

On the question of regional development, Mr. Bose rejected the notion that attention would be confined to North Bengal alone. “Not only North Bengal, but the whole of Bengal will witness development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.He further stated that medical colleges would be established in districts across North Bengal that currently lack such institutions, in a phased manner.

His remarks came on the same day that the state’s Chief Minister announced plans to establish medical colleges in three districts of North Bengal. Referring to the BJP’s electoral manifesto, Mr. Bose said the party also envisioned creating four additional large-scale educational and healthcare institutions in the region, including facilities modeled after AIIMS and IIT.The comments have since stirred renewed political discussion, with observers viewing the promises as part of a broader contest over development narratives in North Bengal.
