In the aftermath of a landmark electoral triumph in West Bengal, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday undertook an emotionally resonant initiative to honor party workers who, they say, laid the groundwork for the party’s ascent but did not live to witness it.

Following the party’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections — where the BJP secured 207 seats and formed the government in the state — senior leaders and local organizers visited the homes of deceased party workers across several panchyats, offering tributes and meeting bereaved family members.

For many within the party, the moment carried a sense of delayed vindication. BJP officials described the victory as the culmination of years of organizational effort, political struggle, and personal sacrifice by thousands of grassroots workers, some of whom died before seeing the party achieve power in a state long resistant to its ambitions.“The success we celebrate today belongs not only to those present, but also to countless workers whose dedication strengthened the organization over the years,” party leaders said during the commemorative visits. “Many could not witness this day, but their sacrifices will not be forgotten.”

According to party sources, the visits were intended not as a celebration of political power alone, but as an act of remembrance. Floral tributes, moments of silence, and informal gatherings of reflection marked the observances in several locations. The initiative also drew emotional responses from the families of the deceased, many of whom expressed gratitude that their relatives’ contributions had been publicly acknowledged after years of quiet political labor.

Across parts of the state, the atmosphere surrounding the commemorations was marked by solemnity and remembrance — a moment, party leaders suggested, to connect electoral success with the human cost and persistence that preceded it.
