As the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 draw nearer, political tensions continue to escalate, with fresh allegations and counter-allegations intensifying the atmosphere across the state. On Friday, Dr.Sukanta Majumdar, Member of Parliament from Balurghat and Union Minister of State, addressed a press conference responding to remarks made earlier in the day by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She had been campaigning in Harirampur in support of Trinamool Congress candidate Biplab Mitra.

Dr.Sukanta Majumdar sharply criticized the state administration, alleging inaction over serious incidents in Sujapur and Kaliachak, where judicial magistrates involved in SIR-related duties were reportedly detained until late at night and their convoy attacked. He pointed to the arrest of one Mofakkarul Islam at Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, describing him as the “main instigator” behind the unrest. The BJP leader claimed that Mofakkerul Islam had a long history of posting provocative content on social media and questioned why law enforcement had not acted sooner. He further alleged that the state police remained silent until the Supreme Court directed an investigation by the National Investigation Agency.

Raising concerns about the role of the state’s Criminal Investigation Department, Dr.Majumdar accused the government of attempting to shield the accused. He suggested that the CID might file weaker charges to prevent prolonged detention and questioned whether this was politically motivated ahead of elections.Dr.Majumdar also alleged that the ruling All India Trinamool Congress was attempting to consolidate minority votes, claiming links between the accused and the party. He noted that the accused’s residence in Itahar is located near that of minority wing president  of the Trinamool Congress, calling for a deeper probe into possible connections.

Another point of concern raised by Majumdar was the accused’s alleged access to social media while in custody. He questioned how an individual under CID supervision could go live online, suggesting it might encourage further unrest. He demanded suspension of responsible officers if such lapses were confirmed.Drawing parallels with past incidents, Majumdar compared the situation to attacks on central agencies during operations in Sandeshkhali, alleging a recurring pattern. He claimed the Mothabari-Sujapur violence was premeditated and potentially aimed at disrupting connectivity between North and South Bengal.

Responding to allegations from Miss Mamta Banerjee regarding financial inducements by the BJP, Majumdar dismissed the claims, asserting that voters in West Bengal are determined to reject what he described as electoral malpractice by the ruling party. With the election season approaching, such exchanges underscore the increasingly polarized political landscape in the state, where law and order, administrative neutrality, and electoral integrity have become central campaign issues.
