The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, launched a pointed attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party during a public rally in Harirampur in South Dinajpur district on Friday.Addressing a gathering in support of Trinamool Congress candidate and state minister Biplab Mitra in the Harirampur Assembly constituency, Ms. Banerjee accused opposition forces of attempting to disrupt democratic processes and foment unrest. The rally was attended by party leaders, district officials, and representatives of various affiliated organizations.
Referring to recent unrest in Malda, Ms. Banerjee said that while the incidents were “deeply unfortunate,” the state’s Criminal Investigation Department had arrested the principal accused , whom she described as an outsider allegedly attempting to flee through Bagdogra airport. She further claimed that individuals from outside the state had been brought in to instigate violence, adding that a leader associated with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen had been detained in connection with the incident .
The chief minister also alleged that democratic rights were under threat, accusing the BJP of attempting to undermine voting rights and impose restrictive measures on citizens. In a sharply worded critique, she contrasted what she described as the BJP’s “divisive politics” with her party’s emphasis on “humanitarian values.”Warning candidates and voters alike, Ms. Banerjee cautioned against what she termed deceptive tactics, including alleged financial fraud schemes in which individuals might be misled into sharing bank account details. She urged the public to remain vigilant against such practices.Escalating her rhetoric, she accused the BJP of importing money and muscle power into the state and engaging in covert political strategies. She described the party in stark terms, alleging that its governance model was marked by oppression and neglect.
Highlighting her government’s welfare initiatives, Ms. Banerjee pointed to housing schemes and financial assistance programs, including the expansion of the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, as evidence of her administration’s commitment to public welfare. “We do not merely make promises; we deliver,” she told the crowd.Following the rally in Harirampur, the Trinamool Congress suprimo departed for Raiganj in neighboring North Dinajpur district to address another public meeting as part of her ongoing campaign.
