Marking World Heritage Day, the Dakshin Dinajpur Heritage Society convened a press conference on Saturday to press for a stronger commitment to preserving the region’s cultural and historical legacy. The gathering highlighted a growing concern among local advocates that heritage conservation remains underrepresented in both education and public policy.

Among the group’s central demands was the inclusion of local history and heritage studies in school curricula, a move they argued would foster awareness and pride among younger generations. Members emphasized that without early education on regional heritage, many historically significant sites risk fading into obscurity. The society also called for a systematic effort to identify and document heritage sites across every legislative assembly constituency in the district. Such a registry, they said, would not only aid preservation efforts but also serve as an educational resource for the public.

In a notable appeal to policymakers, the organization urged that heritage conservation be treated as a key electoral issue. By integrating preservation into political discourse, members argued, elected representatives could be held accountable for safeguarding cultural assets.A specific demand was raised for the recognition of the Singhavahini Temple in Khapur as a protected heritage site, underscoring its historical and cultural importance to the region.

The press conference was attended by society members including Tuhin Shubhra Mondal and Dipak Mondal, along with others who reiterated the urgency of their appeals. As World Heritage Day draws attention to cultural preservation worldwide, the voices from this corner of South Dinajpur reflect a broader challenge: balancing development with the protection of history that defines local identity.
