In a spirited commemoration of International Women’s Day, a distinctive athletic meet titled the “Asmita League Tournament” was convened at the sports complex of Atreyee DAV Public School in Balurghat on Sunday, bringing together nearly two hundred female participants from across South Dinajpur district.
The tournament, orchestrated through the collaborative initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’s youth engagement program MY Bharat and PM Shri Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, sought to invigorate women’s participation in athletics while underscoring broader themes of empowerment and social inclusion. Participants competed across three age-stratified categories—under 13 years, 13 to 18 years, and above 18 years—engaging in track events that included the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter races. The meet transformed the school’s athletic grounds into a vibrant arena of competitive zeal and communal celebration.

In a lighter yet equally enthusiastic segment of the program, a musical chairs contest was organized exclusively for teachers. The event concluded with the top three finishers receiving commemorative awards, adding an element of conviviality to the otherwise rigorous sporting schedule.Victors in each athletic category were felicitated with medals and certificates, while all participants were awarded certificates in recognition of their involvement—an acknowledgment aimed at fostering sustained engagement in sports among women of the district.
The ceremony was attended by several local dignitaries, including Sandeep Sarkar, the school’s principal, alongside educators and officials such as Rajendra Das and Mousumi Haldar. Also present was Sandeep Dutta.Addressing the gathering, organizers emphasized that the tournament transcended mere athletic competition, serving instead as a platform for amplifying women’s capabilities and cultivating confidence through sport.
For the South Dinajpur district, the Asmita League Tournament has begun to symbolize more than a commemorative event; it represents a burgeoning movement that encourages women to step decisively into athletic arenas and pursue excellence with renewed determination.
