Government employees and teachers affiliated with the Joint Struggle Forum(Joutho Sangrami Mancho) staged a strike across West Bengal on Friday, pressing a series of demands that include the payment of pending Dearness Allowance (D.A.) in accordance with a directive from the Supreme Court.
As part of the statewide protest, demonstrators gathered outside the South Dinajpur District Magistrate’s office in Balurghat, where supporters of the strike organized a picketing program in the morning.Protesters positioned themselves near the entrance of the administrative office and appealed to government staff members arriving for work to join the strike. In some instances, attempts were made to persuade employees from entering the premises as part of the protest action.
Despite these efforts, many government employees chose to report for duty, disregarding the call for the strike. As a result, while the demonstration continued outside, normal administrative activities inside the district office were not entirely disrupted.Leaders of the Joint Struggle Forum(Joutho Sangrami Mancho) said their movement centers on the long-standing demand for payment of pending Dearness Allowance to state government employees and teachers. They have also called for parity with central government rates and immediate settlement of the arrears, a demand they say has remained unresolved for years.
The situation outside the District Magistrate’s office was tense for a brief period during the demonstration, though it later returned to normal as the day progressed. The protest forms part of a broader campaign by employee organizations across the state seeking financial relief and implementation of court directives regarding D.A. payments.
