A sudden midnight storm tore through parts of the Kushmandi block in West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur district, damaging homes, flattening crops and leaving residents shaken after powerful winds struck. The storm, which hit late at night, caused widespread destruction in several villages under the Karanji Gram Panchayat and nearby areas. Strong gusts of wind ripped off tin and thatched roofs from multiple mud houses, while uprooted trees and fallen electric poles temporarily disrupted power supply in parts of the region.
Residents said the sudden onset of the storm in the darkness of night created panic across the villages. Many families were forced to leave their homes and take shelter in safer places until the winds subsided.Beyond the damage to homes, the storm dealt a serious blow to agriculture, the main livelihood in the area. Large stretches of maize and wheat fields were flattened by the strong winds just as the crops were nearing harvest. Farmers said months of hard work had been wiped out in a matter of minutes, leaving them deeply worried about their financial future.
Following the storm, Reza Jahir Abbas from the Kushmandi Panchayat Samiti visited the affected areas to assess the situation. He spoke with maize and wheat farmers in the fields and examined the scale of crop damage. Abbas assured farmers that a detailed report on the losses would be prepared and submitted to the administration for further action.Local panchayat sources said a list of affected families is currently being compiled. Officials from the agriculture department have also begun assessing the extent of damage to farmland in the region. Authorities indicated that government assistance for the affected farmers will be considered after the survey is completed.
In the aftermath of the storm, fallen trees and electric poles also disrupted road access and communication in some pockets. Local administrative teams and electricity department workers later began restoration work to bring the situation back to normal.Even as recovery efforts continue, an atmosphere of anxiety persists in the affected villages. Residents have urged the administration to complete the damage assessment quickly and provide adequate compensation to the families and farmers who suffered losses in the sudden disaster.
