A mysterious pond in a rural corner of West Bengal has captured the attention of residents after a previously unseen brick staircase was discovered on its bed, raising speculation that the site may be linked to an ancient structure. The discovery was made in the village of Kismat Jashahar under the Nazirpur Gram Panchayat in the Balurghat block of Dakshin Dinajpur district. For years, locals have regarded the pond as unusual, noting that even during intense summer heat it had never dried beyond a certain point. This year, however, more than half of the water receded for the first time, revealing what appears to be an old brick-built stairway leading downward into the pond.
The sudden appearance of the structure has sparked widespread curiosity among villagers, many of whom believe it could be part of an ancient architectural complex buried beneath the soil over time.Near the pond stands a Shiva lingam and a partially damaged idol of Kali, where local residents perform regular worship throughout the year. According to villagers, the Kali idol was partially cut and taken away by miscreants many years ago, leaving behind only the remaining portion that continues to be worshiped today.Local residents speculate that the pond might once have been connected to a temple complex or reservoir belonging to an old zamindar estate. Some elderly villagers say they grew up hearing stories that a deep well existed in the middle of the pond, where valuable items were allegedly hidden in the past. The newly exposed staircase has intensified speculation about the pond’s historical significance. Many villagers now believe the site may be the remains of a long-lost structure that gradually became buried beneath layers of soil and vegetation.
Local historians say the discovery could be significant if properly investigated. Himangshu Kumar Sarkar, historian and president of the Dakshin Dinajpur District History Research Council, said that such findings highlight the deep historical roots of the district.“Dakshin Dinajpur is far older and more historically rich than many realize,” Mr. Sarkar said. “Artifacts like these indicate that the region has a long cultural and religious heritage. It is extremely important that the idols and surrounding structures be preserved.”
Residents have urged local authorities and the Archaeological Survey of India to examine the site and conduct a proper study to determine the origin and historical significance of the staircase and nearby religious artifacts. For now, the pond in Nazirpur has become the center of fascination for locals, who hope that experts will soon uncover the history hidden beneath its waters and soil.
