Members of the Indian National Congress staged a road blockade and protest on Saturday near the state bus stand in Balurghat, a town in the South Dinajpur district of West Bengal, opposing a rally and official programs linked to India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi.
The demonstration, organized by the district unit of the party, was led by Gopal Deb, president of the South Dinajpur District Congress Committee. Party workers and supporters gathered near the Balurghat State Bus Stand, raising slogans and blocking traffic for a period of time. The protest temporarily disrupted vehicle movement in the area before local authorities intervened and restored normal traffic.
Speaking during the demonstration, Mr. Gopal Deb criticized the central government over rising prices of petroleum products, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). He alleged that the increasing cost of LPG cylinders has placed a heavy burden on ordinary households. He also claimed that residents of the district have been facing difficulties due to an alleged shortage in LPG cylinder supplies, forcing many consumers to endure delays and inconvenience in obtaining cooking gas.
According to Mr.Gopal Deb, the protest was organized to draw attention to both the price rise and the supply issues. He also called for the resignation of Prime Minister Modi during the demonstration.Local party leaders said the protest followed a call issued by the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee. In response to that call, similar demonstrations were reportedly held in several blocks of South Dinajpur district and in other parts of the state.Officials said the situation in Balurghat remained under control after the brief blockade was cleared.
