A 40-year-old temporary employee of a district hospital was hospitalized with burn injuries after unidentified attackers allegedly hurled acid at her on Saturday evening in Balurghat, according to family members. The incident occurred near the wall of BM High School in the Raghunathpur area on the outskirts of the town, close to the city of Balurghat in Dakshin Dinajpur district, officials said.
According to police sources, the woman, a widow who has been working for several years as a temporary staff member at Balurghat District Hospital, had just finished her duty and was returning home by electric rickshaw(TOTO) when someone from near the school boundary wall threw a corrosive substance at her.The woman reportedly experienced severe burning in her hands and legs immediately after the attack. The driver of the electric rickshaw rushed her to the hospital, where she was admitted to the burn ward. Doctors said her condition is currently stable.
Family members said the victim had been receiving threats prior to the incident. Her daughter alleged that the family had been intimidated through letters and intermediaries and claimed another threat had been issued earlier on the same day.“We had been threatened before — sometimes through letters, sometimes by people sent to warn us,” the daughter said. “Today someone threw acid at my mother.
