A recent increase in benefits under the state government’s Lakshmir Bhandar welfare scheme has stirred fresh political debate in West Bengal, with local leaders of the All India Trinamool Congress claiming that 25 families in the Majhian area of Patiram have defected from the Bharatiya Janata Party to join their ranks.

Majhian, long regarded as a stronghold of the BJP, has now become the site of renewed political contestation following the state’s decision to raise the monthly stipend under Lakshmir Bhandar by 500 rupees. According to Trinamool leaders, the allowance has been increased from 1,000 to 1,500 rupees, directly benefiting many households in the region.

The development unfolded Tuesday afternoon during Dol festivities, when Snehalata Hembram, the district president of the Trinamool Congress’s women’s wing, was present in the area along with local party workers. Party sources said members of the 25 families publicly joined the Trinamool Congress by accepting party flags from Ms. Hembram during the event.Trinamool leaders attributed the shift to growing public confidence in the state government’s welfare initiatives, arguing that the enhanced financial assistance had resonated strongly with economically vulnerable families.

Local BJP leaders, however, dismissed the episode as political theater. They characterized the claims as exaggerated and suggested that the event had been orchestrated for partisan gain. The incident has intensified political sparring in Majhian, underscoring how welfare policy continues to shape electoral dynamics in rural West Bengal.
