What began nearly two decades ago as a modest neighborhood celebration has grown into one of the region’s most anticipated cultural gatherings. The “Apamor Manusher Patiram Basanta Utsav” — loosely translated as the Spring Festival of the People — entered its 18th year this week, drawing a swelling crowd under the stewardship of the Shyam Dance Academy.
The daylong festivities opened in the morning with a vibrant procession through Patiram. Participants, dressed in colorful attire, moved to the rhythm of traditional drums, their faces dusted with abir, the bright powder synonymous with spring celebrations across Bengal. Dance and song accompanied the parade, transforming the town’s streets into a moving tableau of color and sound.
The procession concluded at the field of Patiram High School, where the main cultural program unfolded. By afternoon, the field was overflowing with spectators — estimated in the thousands — including residents and visitors from neighboring areas.Over 18 years, organizers say, the festival has evolved into a true community gathering, transcending age and background. Performances by local dancers and singers formed the heart of the program, while guest appearances added star appeal. Among the featured attractions were a singer from Punjab and a Kolkata-based performer known for a reality television appearance, whose energetic sets drew enthusiastic applause.
Organizers said the event, as in previous years, was conducted with attention to order and safety. The celebration, filled with music and dance, was scheduled to continue into the evening. For many residents, the Basanta Utsav now occupies a central place in Patiram’s cultural calendar — not merely as a seasonal festivity, but as an affirmation of shared identity and communal pride.
