A 40+ - year-old man was died on Tuesday afternoon after being crushed by a falling electricity pole in a village in Kumarganj , an accident that has left residents shaken and renewed questions about safety practices during rural infrastructure work.
The victim, Mushfikur Rahaman Mondal, a resident of Kakpara in Kusumtara village under Safanagar panchayat in the Kumarganj block of Dakshin Dinajpur district, was fatally injured when a utility pole toppled onto him around 2 p.m., according to locals and family members.
The poles had been transported to the area on a van by workers tasked with providing an electricity connection for a submersible pump , residents said. As the workers began unloading the heavy concrete poles along a narrow rural road, the vehicle reportedly lost control. Several poles tumbled to the ground, and one struck Mr. Mondal, pinning him beneath its weight.
Neighbors rushed to free him and transported him to Kumarganj Rural Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Wednesday, sources said. The sudden death has cast a pall over the tightly knit farming community. Relatives and neighbors gathered outside the family home, many in tears, as news of the accident spread through the village.
Nasir Mondal, a relative of the deceased, alleged negligence on the part of those handling the installation. “The workers brought in for the job were very young and inexperienced,” he said. “They could not control the poles properly. One fell directly onto my uncle’s back.”
Residents have called for a full investigation into the incident and demanded accountability from the concerned department, saying that basic safety measures appeared to have been lacking.Local authorities have not yet issued a formal statement on the circumstances surrounding the accident.
