A follow-up and “triggering” meeting focused on solid waste management was held on Thursday afternoon at the Vivekananda Meeting Hall in Kumarganj, where local officials and development workers demonstrated the environmental impact of improper waste disposal.

The program, organized by the Kumarganj Block administration and conducted by the Madhya Ramkrishnapur Gram Unnayan Samity, featured an interactive awareness exhibition on Solid Waste Management (SWM). The initiative aimed to encourage behavioral change at the household level and strengthen community participation in waste segregation and responsible disposal.

Among those present were Uma Roy, Sabhapati of the Kumarganj Panchayat Samiti; Rohit Roy, Swasthyo Karmadhakshya of the Panchayat Samiti; Pabitra Barman, Joint Block Development Officer of Kumarganj; and Mijanur Rahaman, Secretary of the organizing body, along with SWM workers from the Dhadalpara unit.

During the session, a triggering demonstration illustrated how plastic and other waste materials are routinely discarded without consideration for their environmental consequences. Using real-life examples and visual aids, organizers explained how indiscriminate dumping contaminates soil, water and air, posing long-term risks to public health and ecosystems.

The demonstration emphasized several key practices:

  1.  Segregating wet and dry waste at the household level
  2.   Recycling and reusing plastic materials
  3.  Depositing waste at designated collection points
  4.  Reducing reliance on single-use plastics

“Our small but conscious efforts can bring about meaningful change,” Ms.Uma  Roy said. “Responsible plastic use and proper waste management are the need of the hour.”

Echoing that message, Mr.Rohit  Roy noted, “Protecting the environment means protecting our own health. Reducing plastic waste and ensuring its proper disposal is essential.”Mr. Barman stated that the block administration would continue to monitor the implementation of the SWM project and provide necessary support to ensure its success.

In his address, Md.Mijanur  Rahaman stressed the importance of changing public attitudes toward waste. “We often harm the environment unknowingly by discarding plastic and other waste indiscriminately,” he said. “The transformation must begin at home — by separating wet and dry waste, minimizing plastic use and prioritizing reuse and recycling. Active participation from the public, alongside administrative support, is crucial to keeping our villages clean and healthy.”

He added that the organization would continue conducting awareness camps and field-level monitoring to strengthen the project’s implementation.

The meeting concluded with a collective pledge to promote awareness and encourage sustained community involvement in solid waste management efforts.
