Tensions surfaced in Balurghat on Monday as members of the South Dinajpur Nasyashekh Unnayan Parishad staged a protest against what they described as harassment and a “conspiracy” to remove names from the electoral rolls under the ongoing SIR process, citing so-called logical discrepancies.
The demonstrators marched through key streets of Balurghat before gathering outside the office of the District Magistrate, where they held a sit-in protest and submitted a deputation outlining their demands. Protesters alleged that eligible voters were being unfairly targeted, raising concerns over the integrity of the voter verification process.
To prevent any untoward incident, a large contingent of police personnel was deployed in and around the district administration building. The protest remained peaceful under tight security arrangements.
Speaking to the media, Muktar Alam, Secretary of the South Dinajpur Nasyashekh Unnayan Parishad, said the organization would continue to oppose any attempt to disenfranchise voters in the name of administrative scrutiny. He urged the authorities to ensure transparency and fairness in the SIR process.
The district administration has not yet issued an official response to the allegations, even as the protest highlighted growing anxieties among sections of the electorate over revisions to the voter list.
