World Wetlands Day was observed on February 2 with a special educational program at Ayodhya Kalidasi Vidyaniketan, where students were encouraged to deepen their connection with nature and commit to protecting water birds and wetland ecosystems.
The program featured an illustrated talk by bird enthusiast Chinmoy Talukdar, who introduced students from Classes VIII, IX and X to a range of waterfowl and wetland-dependent species. Among the birds showcased were the White-throated Kingfisher, Common Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher and River Lapwing, along with several land birds.
For many students, the session was eye-opening. “We used to see these birds regularly, but we didn’t know their correct names,” said Dia Debnath and Sujit Debnath after the presentation. “Today we pledge to love birds and become friends of nature.”
The initiative was organized by the school with the aim of fostering environmental awareness among young learners. Tuhin Shubhra Mondal, an environmentally conscious teacher and one of the organizers, said the program was designed to help students understand wetlands and develop a sense of responsibility toward nature.By combining education with visual storytelling, the event underscored the importance of wetlands as habitats for birds and highlighted the role young people can play in conserving them.
