The Bharatiya Janata Party staged a protest in Balurghat on Monday, accusing officials involved in the ongoing SIR process of deliberately harassing ordinary citizens and undermining the integrity of the voter verification exercise.
Led by the South Dinajpur district unit of the BJP, party workers marched through the streets of Balurghat before assembling outside the office of the District Magistrate. There, they demonstrated and submitted a deputation demanding that the SIR process be conducted strictly in accordance with the guidelines of the Election Commission.According to the BJP, certain state-appointed Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are acting under the political influence of the ruling Trinamool Congress. Party leaders alleged that these officials were selectively ignoring Election Commission norms and intentionally harassing members of the public, thereby “polluting” the SIR process.
Addressing the gathering, Bapi Sarkar, General Secretary of the South Dinajpur district BJP, said the party would continue its agitation until transparency and fairness were ensured. He urged the district administration to intervene and safeguard the rights of voters.
Anticipating potential unrest, the administration deployed a heavy police presence around the District Magistrate’s office. The protest, however, passed off without incident. The district administration has yet to respond formally to the allegations, as political tensions continue to rise over the implementation of the voter verification process in the region.
