A Trinamool Congress functionary in Balurghat was hospitalized this week after he was allegedly attacked by two members of his own party, an episode that has stirred tensions in the municipal area and prompted rival political interpretations. The injured leader, Tinku Sarkar, the party’s ward president in Ward 22, is being treated at Balurghat District Hospital.

Mr.Tinku Sarkar said he was called by phone on Tuesday afternoon and asked to come for a discussion. After an argument, he alleged, two party workers — identified as Prashanta Dey and Ananta Dutta — assaulted him. According to the complaint, Mr. Dutta bit three of his fingers, causing serious injuries, and the men also struck him with an iron rod and a wooden plank.

News of the attack spread quickly, drawing attention across the town.Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party described the episode as evidence of deepening political infighting within the ruling party’s local organization. But Subhash Bhowal, the Trinamool district president, rejected that characterization, saying the matter stemmed from a personal dispute between two friends rather than factional rivalry.

A written complaint has been filed at the Balurghat police station.Police officers visited the hospital and spoke with the injured man while gathering details of the incident. An investigation is underway, officials said.
