A predawn blaze tore through a row of small businesses along a national highway near the Fulbari area of Gangarampur on Wednesday, reducing four shops to ashes before firefighters brought the flames under control, according to local residents.

The fire broke out suddenly in the early morning hours, catching the neighborhood off guard. People living nearby said they noticed flames leaping from the storefronts at daybreak and rushed to the scene, alerting the fire brigade as smoke spread across the highway.

With the help of residents, firefighters battled the blaze for an extended period before finally containing it. No injuries were reported, though the damage to property was extensive.

Local sources said the destroyed establishments included a stationery shop, a grocery store, a tea stall and a gift shop. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and officials had yet to estimate the financial losses.

Residents described the incident as devastating for the small traders who depended on the shops for their livelihoods. Authorities are expected to begin an investigation into how the fire started.
