A bomb threat for the second consecutive day prompted heightened security and the evacuation of customers at the Balurghat Head Post Office, intensifying anxiety in this district town of Dakshin Dinajpur district.
As the Balurghat Head Post Office provides passport verification services, security was tightened immediately. Customers present on the premises were moved to a safe distance, and local police were informed. Officers arrived promptly, cordoned off the area and began search and sanitization operations. No explosive device was found.
On Friday, a fresh email threat escalated concerns. The message reportedly warned that while police inspections had been conducted the previous day, an explosion would occur “today.” Authorities responded by evacuating the building once again. Bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs were deployed to comb the premises.
The repeated threats caused significant disruption, forcing residents seeking postal and passport-related services to return home without completing their work. Tension briefly gripped surrounding neighborhoods as security personnel conducted thorough checks.
Subal Chandra Biswas, the postmaster of the Balurghat Head Post Office, said that officials were acting with utmost caution and cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies. He urged citizens not to panic and to remain vigilant.As of the latest reports, no untoward incident had occurred. Police said investigations were underway to trace the origin of the threatening emails and to determine whether the messages were part of a coordinated hoax.
