S.B.S. Government College celebrated National Science Day on Saturday with a daylong program that blended scientific inquiry, historical reflection and community recognition, turning the campus into a lively hub of academic engagement.
The event opened with an inaugural address by Dr. Tuhinshubhra Sarkar of the Department of Zoology, who underscored the significance of National Science Day and emphasized the indispensable role of science in advancing society. Professor Paban Ghosh of the Department of Sanskrit reflected on the legacy of scientific thought in ancient India, drawing connections between classical texts — including the Puranas, philosophical treatises and the Upanishads — and the foundations of modern scientific temper.
Dr. Kaushik Maji, the Teacher-in-Charge of the college, addressed the gathering alongside Toton Das, Coordinator of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), and Amulyaratan Biswas, a Bangaratna awardee and guardian of the institution. Each speaker stressed the importance of cultivating scientific awareness and fostering a rational, inquiry-driven society. Dr. Norbu Sherpa, the college’s first former Teacher-in-Charge, joined the program virtually and delivered a motivational message to students.
Among the distinguished guests were Dr. Ashish Das, former Principal of Balurghat College; Dr. Haripada Saha, former professor and Governing Body member of the same institution; Dr. Naba Kumar Das, President of Balurghat B.Ed College; Professor Dr. Kaushik Chattopadhyay; and Kaushik Manna, B.L.R.O. Officer of Hili. Representatives from various administrative offices also attended, lending further significance to the occasion.
A notable segment of the program was the felicitation of teachers from several regional schools, including Hili Ramnath High School, Hili High Girls’ School, Trimohini P.C.U.M. School, Fatepur Balupada High School, Pranjul High School, Krishnashtami High School, Tior Sarbeshwar Girls’ School and Badamail L.P. High School. Organizers described the gesture as a tribute to grassroots educators who nurture scientific curiosity at the foundational level.
Students played a central role in the celebration through an innovative lecture session. Participants — Neela Mahato, Riya Singh, Koel Goswami, Deepjoy Sarkar and Koel Sarkar — presented on key scientific themes, demonstrating both analytical rigor and originality.Other highlights included a quiz competition featuring a “Critical Question Making” round, a Stroop Test demonstration, science model and chart exhibitions, guided laboratory visits and a special display of rare live mangrove plants with detailed explanations of their structure and ecological importance.
Refreshments were arranged for participants, and the enthusiastic involvement of students and guests alike lent the event a vibrant atmosphere. Organizers said the program stands as a meaningful step toward strengthening scientific temper and encouraging sustained engagement with science in the wider community.
