With an acute shortage of blood gripping South Dinajpur district, a quiet but determined effort unfolded on Monday afternoon at the Gangarampur Hospital Blood Centre, where an in-house blood donation camp was organized by the South Dinajpur Voluntary Blood Donors Forum. The initiative was held a day ahead of the 46th Frank Orell Day, observed on February 3 to commemorate the foundation day of the Central Blood Association (C.A.B.). Organizers said the camp was both a tribute to the legacy of Frank Orell and an urgent response to the district’s pressing need for blood.
Medical staff and volunteers worked together to ensure the smooth conduct of the camp. Dr. Tapas Saha of the Gangarampur Hospital Blood Centre, along with counselor Indrani Sen and other staff members, were present to oversee the donation process and guide donors.Addressing the media, Sushanta Kundu, General Secretary of the South Dinajpur Voluntary Blood Donors Forum, said the organization was committed to strengthening blood availability in the district. “We have organized this in-house blood donation camp to pay tribute to the 46th Frank Orell Day. Our larger goal is to create at least one blood donor in every family. Through camps like this, we are steadily moving closer to that objective,” he said.
Health officials acknowledged that such volunteer-driven initiatives have become crucial as hospitals across the district struggle to maintain adequate blood reserves. While modest in scale, Monday’s camp reflected a sustained civic effort to bridge the gap between demand and supply. As South Dinajpur continues to grapple with a severe blood crisis, organizers expressed hope that increased awareness and community participation would help ensure a more reliable blood supply in the days ahead.
