The Balurghat Municipality has approved an ambitious plan to bring the entire town under closed-circuit television coverage while introducing an artificial-intelligence-powered system for residents to lodge civic grievances, officials said after a board meeting on Thursday.

At a news conference on Friday, municipal chairman Surajit Saha said the decisions were adopted at a meeting of the Board of Councilors as part of a broader push to upgrade urban services and streamline responses to public complaints.

Under the proposal, interactive A.I. kiosks will be installed within the municipal area.Residents will be able to stand before the boards and submit complaints, which will be recorded instantly in the municipality’s computer system, allowing departments to track and address issues more efficiently.

Municipal officials also said a new alarm-based system would be introduced to improve door-to-door garbage collection, though details of its operation and timeline were not immediately released. In a nod to the town’s cultural community, the municipality will build a dedicated room for theater groups beside the Hari Madhab Mukhopadhyay Mukta Mancha. The space will allow troupes to display banners and posters for productions staged across the town.

The room had initially been planned next to a forthcoming food zone, but officials said the location was shifted to the open-air stage complex to better honor local theater enthusiasts.Civic leaders said they hoped the mix of technology upgrades and cultural investment would both improve daily life and reaffirm Balurghat’s identity as a center of community activity.
