Balurghat District Hospital has secured the top position in the state’s 2025 Kayakalp assessment, marking its second consecutive year as the highest-ranked district hospital in West Bengal under the cleanliness and infection-control initiative.
The annual Kayakalp program, a state-level health evaluation drive, assesses public hospitals primarily on standards of hygiene, sanitation, and infection prevention practices. While the program does not directly evaluate the quality of patient care, it measures performance across eight distinct parameters, according to officials at the state health department.
Hospital authorities said the 2025 survey included both the main district hospital building and its super-specialty wing. The institution outperformed other district hospitals across the state, maintaining its lead from the previous year.
In 2024, Balurghat District Hospital also ranked first among district-level hospitals. The facility had earlier achieved a top-tier position at the national level in 2023 and secured leading honors in 2022 and 2024 under the same initiative.
“Beyond infection control and cleanliness, there are six other parameters,” said Dr.Sudip Das, the district’s chief medical officer of health. “The evaluation reviews whether e-prescription systems are in place and whether doctors are writing medicines by their generic names. We had to compete with other district hospitals across the state. It is gratifying that we have been able to maintain our standards.”
Officials said the hospital intends to sustain its current level of performance and continue strengthening public health services in the district.
