With Dakshin Dinajpur district facing a severe shortage of blood, a donation camp was organized on Wednesday at the Balurghat Blood Center in an effort to replenish dwindling supplies and raise awareness about the urgent need for donors.

The camp was held with the support of the Balurghat Blood Center and was organized by the Dakshin Dinajpur Voluntary Blood Donors Forum. It was formally inaugurated by Sushanta Kundu, the forum’s general secretary.

Among those present were Soma Kundu, in charge of the in-house camp at the Balurghat Blood Center; Mousumi Sarkar; Dr. Debabrata De, Medical Officer-in-Charge of the center; and counselor Margo Hossain.A total of 17 people donated blood at the camp, including six first-time donors and one woman donor. Organizers described the response as encouraging but insufficient given the scale of the crisis.

District health officials and members of the forum appealed to local clubs, social organizations and community groups including political parties to step forward and organize similar initiatives. With hospitals in Dakshin Dinajpur grappling with a sharp decline in blood reserves, sustained collective efforts, they said, are essential to meet the growing demand and support patients in need.

Calling blood donation a “noble cause” and a social responsibility, organizers urged citizens across the district to participate in future camps and help avert a deepening public health challenge.
