Work has begun on a long-awaited rural road in Malancha under the fourth phase of the state’s “Pathashree” infrastructure initiative, a program conceived by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to overhaul road connectivity across West Bengal.

The foundation stone for the project was laid on Wednesday morning in the Malancha area of Balurghat Block in Dakshin Dinajpur district. According to administrative officials, approximately 3.1 million rupees (31 lakh) has been allocated from the state government’s own funds for the renovation.

The 700-meter stretch, running from Khanpur More to Ayodhya Main Road, has long been in a state of disrepair, causing significant hardship for residents. With the launch of “Pathashree-4,” local authorities say a permanent solution is now within reach, raising hopes of improved mobility and economic activity in the largely agrarian region.

The inauguration ceremony, held around 11 a.m. and was attended by Zila Parishad member Ashok Krishna Kujur, Balurghat Panchayat Samiti Sabhapati Arup Sarkar, GP member Ratna Oraon and Amritkhand Gram Panchayat Pradhan Debdut Barman.

Addressing the gathering, Mr.Arup Sarkar said the project reflected the chief minister’s “people-centric initiative,” emphasizing that it was being financed from the state’s own resources. “Once renovated, this road will bring a significant transformation in rural connectivity and help revive the local economy,” he said.

District officials added that work is expected to be completed within the next few weeks, after which the road will be opened to the public. Improved transportation infrastructure is also expected to ease the movement of agricultural produce, a crucial factor in this farming-dependent district.
