The cheers echoing across playing fields and indoor courts this weekend at Dakshin Dinajpur University signaled more than athletic competition. They marked a celebration of community.
The university’s two-day Annual Sports Meet 2026 began on Friday, Feb. 6, bringing together students, faculty members and staff in an event organizers described as a tribute to camaraderie as much as to sport. On Saturday, the second day of the meet, attention turned to the Tridhara Club in Balurghat, where a badminton tournament drew around 50 students along with professors and university employees. Ten teams competed, their matches unfolding before an enthusiastic crowd of colleagues and friends.
A highlight of the day was the participation of the vice chancellor, Prof. Dr. Pranab Ghosh, whose presence added to the energy in the hall and drew warm applause from players and spectators alike. The opening day’s events had taken place at the Balurghat B.Ed. College ground, where roughly 100 students competed across eight disciplines. Winners and runners-up were honored by the university with mementos and certificates, a gesture that underscored both achievement and encouragement.
Separate events were also organized for faculty and staff members, a feature many participants said made the gathering especially lively. Teachers and students sharing the field offered a rare image of academic life set aside in favor of teamwork and recreation.
“The annual sports meet is one of the most important events of our university,” Dr. Ghosh said. “Through sports, it spreads the message of goodwill and friendship among students, teachers and employees. It is a memorable experience for all of us.”By the meet’s close, participants said the competition had done more than produce winners. It had strengthened ties across classrooms and offices, turning a sporting schedule into a shared celebration of unity, enthusiasm and belonging.
