Three new Members-in-Council (MIC) were appointed to the Balurghat Municipality on Wednesday, in a move that local officials said would help streamline administrative work that had slowed in recent weeks.
At a swearing-in ceremony held at the Subarnatata hall within the municipal building, Mahesh Parakh, Bipul Kanti Ghosh and Anoj Sarkar formally assumed office as Members-in-Council. The oath of office was administered by Surajit Saha, the chairman of the municipality.
Among those present at the ceremony were Vice Chairman Munmun Kar and Subhash Chaki, president of the town unit of the All India Trinamool Congress, along with other municipal councilors.
The three appointees had previously served as Members-in-Council during the tenure of former chairman Ashok Kumar Mitra. Roughly six weeks ago, 14 councilors from the Trinamool Congress had moved a no-confidence motion against Mr.Ashok Mitra. He subsequently resigned following party directives. Mr. Saha was later appointed chairman, with Ms. Kar assuming the role of vice chairman.
Officials said the delay in appointing Members-in-Council had posed administrative challenges. “I have been working as chairman for nearly a month. Without the appointment of MICs, it was difficult to carry out several responsibilities. With today’s appointments, the pace of work will increase,” Mr. Saha said.
Notably absent from the ceremony were Mr. Mitra and four councilors considered close to him.
Addressing the issue, Mr. Chaki said all councilors had been invited personally but were unable to attend due to prior party commitments. He dismissed suggestions of internal factionalism, asserting that the appointments were made in accordance with party directives, similar to the selection of the chairman and vice chairman.
