Amid a severe blood shortage in West Bengal’s South Dinajpur district, a voluntary blood donation camp was organized on Saturday at the Balurghat Blood Center to address the growing crisis. The initiative was led by the South Dinajpur Voluntary Blood Donors Forum in collaboration with the Madarganj Joyguru Sarbojanin Durga Puja Committee. Organizers described the situation as one of the most critical shortages the district has faced in recent months.
The camp was formally inaugurated by Sushanta Kundu, General Secretary of the South Dinajpur Voluntary Blood Donors Forum. Among those present were Tony Ghosh, President of the organizing club; Dr. Debabrata Dey of the Balurghat Blood Center; and Kanak Das, counselor at the blood center, along with members of the Joyguru Club.A total of 28 individuals donated blood during the camp, including two women. Notably, 12 of the donors were first-time participants — a development organizers hailed as an encouraging sign amid the ongoing shortage.
Speaking at the event, organizers emphasized the urgent need for regular voluntary blood donation drives to ensure that patients in the district’s hospitals do not face life-threatening delays due to insufficient blood supplies.Community leaders called upon residents to come forward and contribute, underscoring that sustained public participation is essential to overcoming the crisis.
