A new chapter for rural enterprise began Saturday afternoon in Mahinagar, under the Tapan Assembly segment of Dakshin Dinajpur district, where a “Bamboo Livelihood Business and Development Support Center,” organized by India’s Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, was formally inaugurated.

The center, established under the aegis of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, seeks to make the residents of Dakshin Dinajpur more self-reliant by strengthening bamboo-based livelihoods and providing structured business development support to artisans.

The inauguration ceremony was led by Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and the Member of Parliament from the Balurghat Lok Sabha constituency. Addressing the gathering, he emphasized the importance of promoting sustainable rural industries and empowering traditional craft communities through institutional backing and market linkage.

Also present at the event was the Balurghat Assembly constituency’s legislator(MLA) and noted economist, Ashok Lahiri, who highlighted the economic potential of bamboo and cane industries in the district. He described the initiative as a significant step toward integrating traditional craftsmanship with modern business practices.

Local artisans expressed optimism following the launch. Many in the district are engaged in crafting products from bamboo, cane and other natural materials — ranging from household goods to decorative items. They believe the new support center will enhance their skills, improve product quality and expand access to wider markets. With Dakshin Dinajpur known for its skilled handicraft workers, officials and residents alike see the project as a meaningful stride toward self-employment, rural development and the preservation of traditional crafts in an increasingly competitive economy.
