Members of the tribal community in West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur district on Friday staged a protest condemning recent attacks on indigenous people in neighboring Assam, including reports of homes being set on fire.
Gathering in Balurghat, protesters submitted a memorandum to the district magistrate, denouncing what they described as inhuman acts of violence against innocent tribal families and demanding the immediate restoration of peace in the affected areas.
Although the exact cause of the violence in Assam remains unclear, demonstrators said such attacks on vulnerable communities were unacceptable under any circumstances. Through the district administration, they urged both the Assam government and the central government to intervene swiftly to bring the situation under control.
To prevent any untoward incidents, authorities deployed heavy police security around the district magistrate’s office. Before submitting the memorandum, protesters marched from the Balurghat High School ground, moving through key city streets before concluding their demonstration at the administrative headquarters.
The protest remained peaceful, with participants emphasizing solidarity with Assam’s indigenous communities and calling for accountability and protection of tribal rights.
