The South Dinajpur District Information and Cultural Affairs Department on Friday organized a solemn prayer meeting at Rabindra Bhavan in Balurghat to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, paying tribute to the Father of the Nation through interfaith readings, music, and reflection on his enduring ideals.
The annual observance, held on the morning of Jan. 30, brought together district officials and members of the public in a collective act of remembrance. Floral tributes were offered at a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the outset of the programme.
The prayer meeting featured Ramdhun and bhajan performances by Dipti Basak, accompanied on the tabla by Manab Biswas. Sacred readings were drawn from multiple faiths, reflecting Gandhi’s belief in harmony and inclusiveness: excerpts from the Bhagavad Gita were read by Sanchita Goswami, passages from the Quran by Abdus Samad Sarkar, and verses from the Bible by Reverend Amrit Mondal. The programme was conducted by Ruma Mishra.
Azizur Rahman, District Information and Cultural Affairs Officer, said the observance highlighted significant aspects of Gandhi’s life and philosophy. Through cultural performances and speeches, speakers recalled his unwavering commitment to truth and non-violence and his decisive role in India’s freedom struggle.
Organizers said the event was intended not only as a tribute, but also as an effort to introduce Gandhi’s ideals to younger generations. Participants reflected on his message of peace, tolerance, and communal harmony, reaffirming its relevance in contemporary times.
