A sense of alarm spread through Munglishpur village on Tuesday afternoon after villagers discovered a badly decomposed, near-skeletal body in an abandoned pond overgrown with water hyacinth, local residents said.

The body was found in Bilpara hamlet of Munglishpur, under the Mohana gram panchayat area of Kumarganj police station. Residents first became suspicious after noticing a strong foul odor near a long-neglected pond beside the home of a local resident, Dalu Hansda. When villagers cleared away the dense layer of water hyacinth, the remains came into view.

Police from Kumarganj police station arrived soon after being alerted and recovered the body from the pond. Siurces said the advanced state of decomposition suggests the death occurred a considerable time ago, making immediate identification impossible. The remains have been sent for post-mortem examination. Investigators are examining whether the death was accidental or the result of a criminal act and are cross-checking the case against reports of missing persons filed in nearby areas.

The discovery has left residents of the village shaken, with many expressing fear and concern as the investigation continues.
