A three-day folk theatre workshop aimed at promoting the West Bengal government’s development initiatives began on Tuesday at the community hall in Kushmandi, in the Dakshin Dinajpur district.
Organized by the district Information and Cultural Affairs Department under the initiative of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the workshop has brought together 180 artists associated with the Lok Prasar (folk outreach) project from different parts of the district. The program is centered on Loknatya Khon, a traditional folk theatre form, blending cultural expression with public awareness.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Azizur Rahman(DICO), an official of the district Information and Cultural Affairs Department; Shubhayon Haque, Information and Cultural Affairs Officer of the Gangarampur subdivision; Dr. Naina De, the Block Development Officer of Kushmandi; local legislator(MLA) Rekha Roy; Amarish Sarkar, Saha- Sabhadhipati of the Zila Parishad; and other dignitaries.
As part of the opening program, a short film titled “Lakshmi Elo Ghore” was screened, highlighting various welfare and development schemes introduced by the state government and their impact on everyday life.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Rahman said the primary objective of the workshop was to enhance the skills of folk artists and enable them to effectively communicate the government’s development programs through traditional performance forms.
Over the next three days, participants will receive training in different aspects of folk theatre while also learning ways to present information about state-led development initiatives to the public. Organizers said the workshop seeks to create a meaningful link between culture and development, offering a new direction to the cultural landscape of Dakshin Dinajpur.
