Rail connectivity in North and South Dinajpur districts is set to receive a boost, with the Union Ministry of Railways approving the start of work on two long-awaited rail link projects, local leaders said on Tuesday.
Sukanta Majumdar, the Member of Parliament from Balurghat and a Union Minister of State, announced that the Railway Ministry has issued instructions to begin construction on the Gazole–Itahar and Buniadpur–Itahar rail connections. The projects are expected to strengthen transportation links across both districts.
Dr.Sukanta Majumdar said he had personally urged Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to expedite the projects, citing their importance for regional development. According to him, the railway minister has now confirmed that formal directions to start the work have been issued.
“I had requested that these projects be implemented at the earliest, and the Railway Minister has responded positively,” Dr.Sukanta Majumdar said, expressing gratitude to the ministry for the decision.
Once completed, the new rail links are expected to improve passenger movement and economic connectivity in North and South Dinajpur, regions that have long sought better access to the broader rail network of West Bengal.
Local residents and officials see the announcement as a significant step toward reducing travel time and strengthening infrastructure in an area where rail expansion has often moved slowly.
