A nationwide bank strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions brought routine financial activity to a standstill on Tuesday in Balurghat, a town in the Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal, leaving customers stranded and branches shuttered.

Bank employees staged protests outside the State Bank of India branch in Balurghat, pressing their demand for a five-day workweek and other long-pending issues related to workload and staff welfare. The demonstration was part of a coordinated action that affected banking operations across the country.

With banks closed for the day, many customers were forced to return without completing essential transactions. Some had arrived hoping to withdraw cash or resolve urgent financial matters, only to find locked doors and protest banners.“I came here for an urgent need, but the bank is closed because of the strike,” said Krishna Dutta, a customer. “It has become very difficult for people like us.”

Union leaders said the protest was aimed at drawing the attention of the government and bank management to long-standing demands. “The five-day workweek is not a luxury but a necessity, considering the increasing pressure and workload on bank employees,” said Shashwata Sarkar, district secretary of the State Bank employees’ union. “We are compelled to take to the streets because our concerns are being ignored.”

Union officials warned that if negotiations fail to make progress, similar actions could continue in the coming days, prolonging inconvenience for customers already adjusting to reduced in-person banking services.

For now, residents of Balurghat — like millions of bank customers nationwide — are left waiting for a resolution, hoping that talks will resume and normal banking operations will soon be restored.
