Police in West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur district on Saturday arrested a local trader on charges of illegally selling raw materials used to manufacture illicit country liquor, allegedly using his jaggery business as a front. The accused, identified as Saumen Kundu, 50, a resident of Bangi Baidyanathpara under Balurghat police station, was taken into custody following a raid at his warehouse in the town’s Tahabazar area. Officers seized nearly one quintal of prohibited material, locally known as “Bakar Guli,” which is commonly used in the preparation of illegal distilled liquor.
According to police officials, Soumen Kundu had been operating a jaggery trade in the busy market area for several years. However, acting on a tip-off from confidential sources, investigators learned that he was allegedly supplying Bakar Guli covertly to local bootleggers.
A special police team led by the town officer of Balurghat police station conducted the surprise raid on Saturday afternoon. The banned items were recovered during a search of the premises, and Soumen Kundu was detained on the spot.
