With the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 approaching, political activity across the state is intensifying. In South Dinajpur district, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday claimed that 23 families from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) formally joined the BJP in the Kumarganj Assembly constituency.
The development took place in the Puntair haat area, where the new entrants were welcomed into the party by the South Dinajpur district BJP president, Swarup Choudhury, along with other senior party leaders. Party flags were handed over to the families in a brief joining ceremony, BJP leaders said.
BJP representatives described the move as a sign of growing support for the party in the region ahead of the elections, while accusing the ruling TMC of losing ground at the grassroots level. Trinamool Congress leaders, however, have not immediately responded to the BJP’s claims.
As the election season gathers momentum, such defections and counterclaims are expected to play a prominent role in shaping the political narrative across West Bengal.
