India’s National Voters’ Day was observed on Sunday in Balurghat with a public demonstration of civic resolve, as government-backed youth organizations and local civil society groups sought to reaffirm the primacy of the vote in the world’s largest democracy.
The program, organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through Mera Yuva Bharat (My Bharat), South Dinajpur district, and supported by the Sabji ATM Welfare Society, was held at Jatali More. A colorful rally proceeded from Jatali More to Beltala Park, drawing participation from students, educators, first-time voters and senior citizens alike. Both new and veteran voters were formally felicitated, underscoring the continuity of democratic responsibility across generations.
Soumit Das, headmaster of Nalanda Vidyapith High School, noted that this year’s National Voters’ Day theme—“My India, My Vote”—and its accompanying message, “Indian Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy,” were designed to confront voter apathy and reinforce civic ownership. Encouraging first-time voters, he said, was not merely symbolic but essential to sustaining democratic legitimacy.
District coordinator Rajendra Das of My Bharat, along with other officials and members of the Sabji ATM Welfare Society, addressed the gathering on the constitutional importance of voting. Participants collectively took a pledge to promote electoral awareness and to exercise their franchise responsibly, a ritual intended to translate civic ideals into personal commitment.
Organizers said the event succeeded in renewing public attention to the power of the ballot, particularly among young voters, positioning participation not as a procedural duty but as a defining act of citizenship.
