In a shocking incident that raises serious concerns over the safety of election officials, a Micro Observer deployed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) was allegedly assaulted and threatened with death by an unruly mob at the Kumarganj Block Development Office campus on Saturday afternoon.

The victim, Dibyendu Garain, who had been assigned Micro Observer (MO) duty from January 15, 2026, reported that around 3:00 PM, a mob consisting of 80 to 90 people forcefully entered the ICDS office while he was performing his official duties(SIR hearing ). According to his complaint, the mob physically attacked him, verbally abused him, and issued threats to kill him.

Garain stated that he was repeatedly punched and slapped, sustaining injuries to his chest and back. He further alleged that no local authority was present at the scene during the assault, leaving him vulnerable for nearly an hour.

Rescue arrived only after the BDO-Kumarganj(Shribas Biswas), accompanied by police personnel, reached the office, by which time significant harm had already been done.

Due to his physical and mental condition following the incident, Garain said he was unable to lodge a First Information Report (FIR) in person and has requested authorities(SP-D.Dinajpur) to treat his written complaint as an official FIR.The incident has sparked concerns over law and order during election-related duties and the protection of officials tasked with ensuring free and fair democratic processes. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, and an investigation is expected to follow.
