Dr. Sukanta Majumdar & Nitin Gadkari

In his letter, Dr. Majumdar highlighted the urgent need for widening National Highway-512, stressing its strategic and developmental importance for lakhs of commuters in Malda and the Dinajpur districts. He noted that the project, which qualifies for four-laning as per Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) data, has faced significant delays due to land acquisition issues and encroachments. He urged that sanction for four-lane widening, along with the proposed six-lane expansion, be accorded top priority.

The minister also drew attention to the poor condition of the Dalkhola–Siliguri corridor, describing the deterioration of the highway as severe. According to him, the damaged stretch has been causing major inconvenience to daily commuters and commercial transporters, adversely affecting regional economic activity. He called for immediate directions to fast-track repair and reconstruction work.

Additionally, Dr. Majumdar sought urgent review and approval of strategic connectivity projects involving SH-19 (Raiganj–Buniadpur) and NH-512 under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. He emphasized that these routes are vital due to their proximity to international borders and their role in connecting to the Hili International Land Port, which is crucial for trade and economic growth in Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur.

Reiterating the national and economic significance of the projects, Dr. Majumdar appealed for swift approvals to ensure improved connectivity, enhanced trade, and better infrastructure development in North Bengal.
