Serious allegations of physical and mental abuse have surfaced against a husband and his family, allegedly continuing since the victim’s marriage. Adding to the turmoil, accusations of the husband’s extramarital affair further strained the marital relationship, leading to frequent disputes between the couple.According to the 32-year-old complainant, she was married around 13 years ago to Afzal Hossain Mondal, a resident of Jorloi village under Deor Gram Panchayat in Kumarganj police station area of South Dinajpur district. The couple has two daughters aged 12 and 5. The complainant alleged that her husband’s extramarital relationship became the primary reason behind ongoing marital discord. She further claimed that she was subjected to regular physical and mental torture by her husband and other family members, who also allegedly forced her to pay several lakhs of rupees and snatched her gold ornaments after assaulting her.

In an attempt to resolve the dispute, a village-level arbitration (salishi) meeting was convened on Sunday evening at the husband’s residence in Jorloi. The woman’s parents were also called to attend the meeting. However, no resolution was reached despite prolonged discussions. As it was late at night, the woman’s mother, 55-year-old Taslima Bibi, stayed back at her son-in-law’s house.Allegedly, the situation took a horrific turn late Sunday night at around 8pm. Afzal Hossain Mondal, along with his family members, reportedly attacked Taslima Bibi, brutally assaulting her and attempting to kill her by stabbing her in the neck and chest. She sustained critical injuries in the attack. Hearing her screams, neighbors Riajul Mondal and Piyar Ali Ahmed rushed to the spot and helped rescue her.
The severely injured woman was initially taken to Gangarampur Sub-Divisional Super Specialty Hospital. Following preliminary treatment and due to the deterioration of her condition, she was referred to Malda Medical College and Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.On Monday night, Taslima Bibi’s husband, Sohrab Mondal, lodged a written complaint at Kumarganj police station against the accused son-in-law and his family members. The victim’s daughter has also filed a separate complaint at the same police station. Police from Kumarganj have launched a detailed investigation into the incident. However, no response or statement has yet been received from the accused.
