In a significant boost to rail connectivity and passenger safety in Dakshin Dinajpur district, the Tebhaga Express running between Balurghat and Kolkata has been upgraded with modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches, replacing the old ICF coaches. The upgraded train was formally flagged off early this morning in a ceremonial programme organised by the Railways. The event was attended by Katihar Division DRM Kirendra Nada, Member of Parliament from Balurghat and Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region, Dr.Sukanta Majumdar, Balurghat MLA Dr Ashok Lahiri, Gangarampur MLA Satyen Roy, and senior railway officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr.Sukanta Majumdar said that the induction of LHB coaches marks a major leap forward for the region’s rail infrastructure. “LHB coaches are lighter, more advanced and significantly safer than the earlier ICF coaches. This upgrade will enhance passenger safety as well as allow higher operating speeds, making travel more comfortable and efficient for people of Dakshin Dinajpur,” he said. The development has generated visible enthusiasm among regular passengers, many of whom have long demanded modern coaches on this key route connecting the district headquarters to Kolkata.Dr.Majumdar further underlined that this is part of a broader vision to transform connectivity in Dakshin Dinajpur. He announced that the Balurghat Amrit Bharat Station project is expected to be completed by February next year, which will further modernise passenger amenities. Keeping future growth in mind, he also assured that lift facilities would be installed at the station to handle increased passenger footfall as train services expand.

Over the past few years, Dr.Sukanta Majumdar has played a pivotal role in pushing for infrastructure upgrades in this border district, often considered remote and underdeveloped in terms of connectivity. The introduction of LHB coaches and the ongoing station redevelopment project reinforce his image as a key transformer of Dakshin Dinajpur’s connectivity sector, bridging the gap between the region and the rest of the state. With sustained focus on modern rail infrastructure, Dakshin Dinajpur is steadily moving towards safer, faster and more inclusive connectivity, signalling a new phase of development for the district.
