Eight-point charter of demands

Hundreds of farmers under the banner of the Dakshin Dinajpur Krishak Samiti on Tuesday launched an indefinite sit-in protest in front of the district administrative building, pressing an eight-point charter of demands including the sale of fertilisers at Maximum Retail Price (MRP) and procurement of crops from farmers at support prices through panchayats. The protest began in the afternoon as aggrieved farmers accused fertiliser dealers across the district of selling fertilisers above the MRP, causing severe financial distress to cultivators. The farmers said they had earlier submitted deputations to the Agriculture Department and the district administration, demanding strict action to curb black marketing of fertilisers.
According to the protesters, the administration had assured them that steps would be taken to ensure fertiliser sales at MRP across all outlets in the district. However, despite the passage of considerable time, fertilisers are still allegedly being sold at higher prices, prompting farmers to intensify their agitation.Addressing the protesters, Sanjit Kumar Mondal, District Secretary of the Dakshin Dinajpur Krishak Samiti, said that repeated appeals and deputations had failed to yield results. “We were assured that our demands would be fulfilled, including the sale of fertilisers at MRP. But even after a long time, nothing has changed. That is why we have been forced to launch this indefinite sit-in,” he said.
Mr.Mondal added that the eight-point demands also include procurement of all crops from farmers at support prices through panchayats, along with other issues related to farmers’ welfare. He asserted that the agitation would continue until all demands are met.The protest has drawn attention to growing discontent among farmers in the district, as they continue to await concrete action from the administration.
