The resignation comes days after 14 out of 25 municipal councillors moved a no-confidence motion against Ashok Mitra, triggering intense internal tussle within the municipality. After several days of political uncertainty, Ashok Mitra stepped down following directives from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) state leadership.Senior TMC leaders were present at the time of submission, including South Dinajpur district TMC president Subhash Bhawal and several municipal councillors.

Speaking to the media, Subhash Bhawal stated that the resignation was in line with party instructions issued by the state leadership. He added that Ashok Mitra would continue to remain active in the party and hold important organisational responsibilities at the district level.
Ashok Mitra, after resigning, said he had stepped down in obedience to party discipline and would continue to work as a loyal party worker following the TMC’s directions.
Confirming the development, SDO Subrata Barman said the chairman’s resignation letter had been received and that all further steps would be taken in accordance with legal provisions. He also clarified that since the chairman has resigned, the no-confidence process against him is no longer required.
The political implications of the chairman’s resignation just ahead of the municipal elections remain to be seen. Meanwhile, opposition parties have seized the opportunity to criticise the ruling party over the episode.
