Along with the entire state, 'Kanyashree Day' was also celebrated across Dakshin Dinajpur District on Monday with the aim to empower the girl child and work towards gender equality. However, the main program of the district level was held at Baluchhaya Bhavan, adjacent to the district administration building at Balurghat. Mr. Biplab Mitra, Minister of Consumer Affairs of West Bengal graced the chair of the chief guest. District Magistrate Bijin Krishna(IAS), Superintendent of Police, Rahul Dey(IPS), Additional District Magistrate (LR),Dr. Haaris Rasheed (IAS), Additional District Magistrate Development, Abul Kalam Azad Islam, Sub-Divisional officer (Balurghat Sadar), Suman Dasgupta along with other officials of the district administration and several eminent personalities of the district were also present in the programme.
Minister of Consumer Affairs, District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police gave a short speech on the necessity and prospect of the Kanyashree Prakalpa.
Hence, Kanyashree Prakalpa is Bengal’s flagship scheme for the empowerment of adolescent girls. The scheme is the brainchild of Mamata Banerjee, chief minister, and has been acknowledged as a best practice the world over.The purpose of this initiative is to uplift those girls who are from poor families and thus can't pursue higher studies due to tough economic conditions. It has been given international recognition by the United Nations Department of International Development and the UNICEF.
The programme came to an end with the speech of Tapan Sarkar, District Project Manager of Kanyashree Prakalpa and the National Anthem “Jana Gana Mana”. More than a thousand students, teachers and guardians attended the programme.
